Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships among age, obesity index, smoking habit and serum lipids in a Japanese male population. The subjects were 11, 679 Japanese men, aged between 30 and 59, who had a health check up at Tokai University Medical Examination Center during a period between April 1995 and March 1996. The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to their age ; 30 s, 40 s and 50 s, and then subdivided into four groups according to smoking habits : A, non-smoker ; B, ex-smoker ; C, 1-20 cigarettes a day ; D, over 21 cigarettes a day. Dietary habits and alcohol consumption were surveyed using a questionnaire. The data were analyzed in relation to smoking habit. In the smoker group of all decades, the triglyceride levels were higher (p<0.001), and total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were lower than in the non-smokers (p<0.001) . These trends were marked in older subjects. Compared with the non-smokers, the smokers ate less, weighed less and consumed more alcohol (p<0.001) . Most of these indices showed a dose-response correlation with the number of cigarettes consumed. There was no difference between groups A and B in all age. These findings were consistent with the former analyses of our data from 11, 708 male with medical check-up in 1991. Our findings indicate that smoking habit effects on serum lipids, dietary habits, and the obesity indices in adult males.
