Abstract
Statistical observations were made of 53 cases of periesophageal abscess examined at Sasaki's Clinic in the last 20 years. Reports are made on various observations regarding the frequency of the disease; the age, sex, and occupation of the patient; the subjective symptoms and its cause ; the kind of foreign bodies; the time of the day when the foreign bodies were erroneously swallowed ; the duration of hospital treatment ; the locality of the fistula; and the method of treatment.
The preventive methods are;1) early diagnosis, 2) special attention to artificial teeth, 3) avoidance of non-esophagoscopical examinations and of unreasonable esophagoscopy.
The ideal treatment of the abscess is the intraesophageal incision, but the extraesophageal incision must be resorted to without hesitation when the condition takes a protracted course.
