From 1972 to 1977, 84 cases of foreign bodies in the esophagus have been treated in our clinic. The statistical results were as follows:
(1) The mean incidence of foreign bodies in the esophagus was 14 cases in each year.
(2) Of the 84 cases, male predominance was 5 to 3, and 48 cases (57%) were under 6 years of age. The youngest patient was 7 months old and the oldest was 84 years old.
(3) Thirty three cases involving coins, occurred only in the children, particularly between the age of 1 to 7 years.
(4) The dental prosthesis were removed from 18 patients. This incidence seems to be more frequent than those experienecd from 1962 to 1972.
(5) Approximately half of the foreign bodies were lodged at the entrance of esophagus.
(6) The Robert's esophagoscope was usually used for the removal, and 73 cases were treated under general anesthesia.
(7) All foreign bodies were safely removed by the first or second trial, and no severe complications were noticed as far as the present 84 cases were concern.
The paper also discusses the technical problems of removal of the prosthesis and P. T. P.(Press Through Pack) of medicinal package.
