Delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions to four recall antigens (candida extract, candida broth, SK/SD, PPD) and one new antigen (DNCB) were examined as para-meters of host immune response in 81 patients with malignant head and neck tumors. The results were as follows. 1) Skin reactions to Candida extract, PPD DNCB (especially to candida extract) were significantly decreased compared to the normal controls and benign diseases. The tendency became more significant in the advanced cancer patients. 2) The incidence of anergy increased compared to the normal controls and benign diseases, and in malignancy the incidence of anergy increased when the disease was advanced and the general physical condition of the patients was regarded as poor. 3) When the various delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions including candida extract are examined in patients with malignant head and neck tumors, the results bring valuable information for host cellulary immunity, judgment of prognosis, and possible detection of the recurrence of the cancer.
