The effects of Nitrogen mustard N-oxid (Nitromin) on the bioelectric phenomena of the inner ear of guinea pig were studied. 20mg/kg of Nitromin was administered intravenously. The amplitude of cochlear microphonics diminished within several hours after the administration and no recoveries were observed. The magnitudes of endocochlear DC potential (EP) began to decrease several hours after the administration and 24 hours later the magnitudes of EP reached the minimum level, between +20 mV and +50 mV. Then in all animals the magnitudes of EP seemed to recover gradually, and some of them reached the normal range. There can be two possible speculations considered about the mechanism of the diminution of EP. One is the functional derangement of the generator system of EP in the stria vascularis and the other is the electrical leakage of EP from scala media due to the decrease of electrical resistance of the cochlear partition. However, no remarkable changes in the ultrastruetures of the stria vascularis were found, and no significant changes in the electrical resistance of cochlear partition.
