This paper reported a rare case of malignant pleomorphic adenoma in the larynx. The patient was a 34-year-old housewife complaining of hoarseness for 14 months.
Laryngoscope revealed that the tumor was located on the left subglottic area. Initially, the tumor was diagnosed as chondrosarcoma, and a total-laryngectomy was performed.
The extirpated tumor was 2.5X1.5 cm, revealing a smooth surface with cartilage-like consistence. The cut surface was solid and yellowish white or greyish white in color. Histologically, the tumor was encapsulated with thin connective tissue and revealed mixed appearances of chondromatoid, osteoid, myxoid and glandular structure. The interstitial tissue of the tumor was composed of fibrous or hyaline materials. Some mitosis and evident capsular infiltration of the tumor cells were observed, thus we diagnosed the tumor as a malignant pleomorphic adenoma.
Two years and two months after the operation, the patient is in good health without any signs of recurrence.
