There are many reports on cancers of the larynx and hypopharynx, but concomitant occult thyroid carcinoma seems to be quite rare. Of 50 laryngeactomies combined with thyroidectomy performed in 8 years at our hospital, occult thyroid carcinomas were discovered in 4 patients when the laryngeal or hypopharyngeal tumors were histologically examined. Three patients were male and one was female. In these 4 cases, concomitant neck dissections were done and one metastasis of the thyroid was found in the lymph node. One patient died from laryyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Three patients have been alive withont disease. None of these patients exhibited further spread of the thyroid cancer following diagnosis. Other reports on laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinomas associated with carcinomas of the thyroid are reviewed and discussed.
