Using a cotton swab, the pseudomembrane of the throat was coated with 2% solution of potassium tellurite. After 10 min., the coloration indicated the degree of severity. Black and dark gray corresponded positive reaction, light gray and unchanged colors were regarded negative, that is, a coloration darker than gris-gris is positive. The author made a comparative study on 98 cases, diphtheria and other diseases of the throat, by examining the character of the pseudomembrane, days of sickness, and the effect of therapeutic serum injections. It was found that the percentage of positive reaction was high in thick and adherent pseudomembrane, and also in fresh cases (as high as 78.2%); otherwise the percentage was lower. The percentage of positive reaction was very high before and on the day of injection of the therapeutic serum, though it lowered afterward. In other diseases than diphtheria, the percentage was very low.
