Sudden sensorineural hearing loss has many causes and rarely occurs bilaterally. One patient with simultaneous bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss is presented.
A 49-year-old female suffered from bilateral hearing loss after blowing of her nose. Experimental tympanotomy of the right ear revealed a perilymphatic fistula in the oval window. No recovery of hearing was attained after operation. A secretory line was seen on the left tympanic membrane as on the right, suggesting that both ears were in the same condition.
If conservative treatment fails to restore hearing, surgery may be necessary to treat perilymphatic fistulas. Therefore we emphasize that perilymphatic fistulas should not be overlooked even though they are rarely bilateral.
