Household-scale methane fermentation system, so-called "biogas digester" has been widely adopted in rural area in Vietnam. Methane gas from this system is mainly used as fuel for cooking. Whereas, digested slurry (hereafter, slurry) is mostly discharged to lower water bodies. Use of slurry at paddy field is one of the effective options, but it has not been conducted in Vietnam. This study aimed at evaluating the availability of the use of slurry at paddy field in Vietnam from fertilizer effect, energy, profitability and greenhouse gas emission in comparison with conventional cultivation at the site. Result was that slurry has almost same fertilizer effect as chemical fertilizer under same fertilization condition, cost and greenhouse gas emission in slurry use system was higher than in conventional cultivation though the energy consumption was different. The greenhouse gas emission was thought to be highly effected by various factors such as fertilization way or supposition of waste water treatment before discharge of slurry in conventional system.
