We have developed hydrocarbon production process from a high-concentration slurry of Botryococcus braunii using thermal pretraetment. Useful co-products, such as water-soluble polymers, caroteniod and xanthphyll, were obtained in this process. While hydrocarbons of Botryococcus braunii (Botryococcenes) are generally expected as biofuels, investigation of other uses of Botryococcenes revealed that Botryococcenes and hydrogenated Botryococcenes (Botryococcanes) could be utilized as an alternative substance of squalane in cosmetic field. Therefore Botryococcus Braunii have potential as raw materials of microalgae-based biorefinery.
