In order to manufacture hydrocarbon fuel from molasses which has been unused for producing valuable products because of high potassium concentration, hydrothermal treating was conducted to obtain 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-furflal (5-HMF), which is a potential feedstock for catalytic conversion with zeolite catalyst. The catalytic reaction results at 470℃, indicated that production of aromatic hydrocarbons and the main products were naphthalene compounds. Furthermore, the effect of potassium on the catalytic reaction was investigated. Although the presence of potassium uninhibited the formation of aromatic hydrocarbons, the oil yield decreased with the increase in potassium concentration.
