Hinoki wood meal, water and t-butyl alcohol were mixed in two different ratios and 95 % sulfuric acid was added little by little while cooling. The reaction mixture was vigorously stirred at room temperature until it becomes creamy. Then, the reaction mixture was diluted, boiled and the acid insoluble fraction was recovered as acid insoluble lignin. The yield of the lignin was higher than that simply treated with 72 % sulfuric acid and the FT-IR spectra demonstrated remarkable absorption of methyl groups. TGA and TMA curves showed that the treatment with more t-butyl alcohol facilitated the degradation of lignin and improved the thermoplastic properties of lignin. These results suggest that the degree of self-condensation of lignin is able to be controlled by changing the amount of t-butyl alcohol.
