The recent trends in bio-oil production were reviewed in this report. A circulating fluidized bed reactor for the combined heat and power plant was refined to produce bio-oil. Such large-scale biomass pyrolysis system has been commercialized while relatively small-scale system is still under development. R&D target in bio-oil production is shifting from process development to bio-oil upgrading recently. It was revealed that hydrodeoxygenation (or hydrotreating) is one of the challenging topics in the bio-oil upgrading.
