It is necessary to understand the water behavior of coals in order to understand the self-heating characteristics of them because water contained in coals affect self-heating characteristics. In this study, water content and the amount of evaporated water in heating condition were evaluated by a thermogravimetric analyzer (TG). The correlations of these with acid functional groups, specific surface area and pore volume of coals were attempted. As results, it was shown that water content and the amount of evaporated water at 30°C had correlation with the amount of functional groups at 53%RH and 75%RH. On the other hand, it was implied that water content and the amount of evaporated water at 30°C at 97%RH were affected not only by functional groups but also other factors such as pore volume.
