Ammonia from sewage (environmental ammonia) is an environmental pollutant. Current removal methods of environmental ammonia, e.g. nitrification and denitrification, are energy inefficient and generate strong greenhouse gas. In this study, we investigate the organic base-catalyzed synthesis of urea in order to convert environmental ammonia. DBU, which is a well-known strong base, catalyzed this reaction to produce urea in 36% yield at 100 °C from ammonium carbamate as the model substrate of salt of environmental ammonia. This new catalytic system has the potential to change how environmental ammonia is treated for a sustainable society.
