Three coal tar-derived air blown pitches were comparatively investigated in terms of the chemical structure and stabilization reactivity using a set of analytical techniques. Three pitches exhibited different reactivities during stabilization, although they had nearly the same softening points, H/C ratios and solubilities. Principal structural differences among three pitches on the whole were hydrogen aromaticity and crystallinity, and their CS_2 solubles indicated the substantial differences in molecular size and shape.
