The objectives of this study were 1) to clarify via a survey whether residents of Berlin’s Britz Horseshoe Estate (designed by Bruno Taut in consideration of the relationship between building arrangement and courtyard placement) are aware of the concept behind the design, and 2) to determine optimal ways of arranging greenery for housing complexes. The survey revealed that 90% of residents were aware of the design intent (i.e., seamless exterior views from inside and skillful building arrangement to support equal enjoyment of the landscape of courtyards and greenery from indoors) and viewed the current status as favorable. It was found that residents mostly view courtyards through windows, enjoy the building arrangement and courtyard shapes, and appreciate the surrounding abundance of lush vegetation. These outcomes highlight an outstanding way for building arrangement and greenery placement in housing complexes.
