This study was performed to clarify the educational effects of on-board training in fisheries high schools. In the period from June to September 2009, we distributed SD method questionnaires on the "sea", "ship", and "seaman" to ten fisheries high schools in mainly Kyusyu and Shikoku areas. The questionnaires were collected from all together 1,699 students. The analysis of the collected questionnaires has presented the following results: (1) We found that the students of fisheries high schools felt closer to the sea and ships than other students, interested in ships, and considered ships of romantic vision. It was suggested that the students of fisheries high schools appreciated seamen as a profession because the students showed a high orientation in the items of "Respectable" and "Romantic" that evaluated seamen. (2) We examined the effects of education by using training ships and obtained the result indicating that the more opportunities to encounter ships and the more experiences to board ships the students had, the higher orientation toward the "sea", "ship", and "seaman" they showed. Accordingly, it was suggested that the opportunity to encounter ships mainly experienced in the on-board training had an effect to raise the "sea-", "ship-", and "seaman-" orientation of fisheries high school students.
