This study was performed to clarify the fishermen's image of fisheries high school students. In the period from June to September 2009, we distributed questionnaires on the fishermen's image to ten fisheries high schools in mainly Kyusyu and Shikoku areas. The questionnaires were collected from all together 1,699 students. We conducted comparisons of the mean value of marks and factor scores after factor analysis on fourteen items concerning the orientation toward fisherman. Consequently, we found that the following students had a higher fisherman-orientation: students in the navigation course; students born and raised in fishing villages; students whose geographic environment of place of origin features was seaside; students with more opportunities to encounter ships; and students with more experiences of on-board training. Also, we analyzed the free descriptions in the questionnaire by using the KH Coder and found that the fishermen's image could be almost explained by seven categories. Meanwhile, it was suggested that there was a tendency showing a certain relationship between the attribution of students in terms of grade and on-board training experience and the free descriptions in the questionnaire.
