Abstract

Workcation is a combination of the words “work” and “vacation” and refers to a situation where one engages in both work and leisure while traveling. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, telework has been recommended for workers who are able to do it, and the practice has attracted much attention. This study consists of exploratory research on the relationship between one’s ideal surrounding environment and the desire to have a workcation. The results showed that the motivating factors for those intending to go on a workcation were nature, history, entertainment, cold and warm weather, art, and convenience, as well as vacation and work environments. Based on their choice of ideal surrounding environment, those intending to go on a work trip were classified into three groups: environmentally indifferent, digital nomads, and Japanese-style work vacation.
