The purpose of this paper is to analyze Personal Finance Education in the United States, and discusses the implications for education in Social Studies and Civics in Japan. In particular, the analysis focuses on the National Standards in Personal Finance, which was developed by Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, and the Financial Fitness for Life Test (FFFL Test), which was developed by the National Council on Economic Education. The author of this paper and the research group of economic education administered the FFFL Test to high school and university students in Japan in 2004. The major findings from the test results are that both groups have the same problems understanding several concepts of Personal Finance. Based on this result, this paper proposes to improve Personal Financial and Consumer Education in Social Studies and Civics.
