Cultivating the Spirit of Welfare by Encouraging Male High School Students to Volunteer Their Services for the Mentally Handicapped in Home Economics Classes

Abstract
The authors assumed that voluntary services for the mentally handicapped cultivated the spirit of welfare, and tried to encourage male high school students to volunteer in Home Economics class. The results were as follows: 1) Practicing voluntary services improved students' interest in voluntary services. Especially, personal voluntary services improved their interest. 2) The students who took a great interest in voluntary services tended to cultivate well the spirit of welfare. 3) Meeting the mentally handicapped gave the students who had little interest in voluntary services an opportunity to arouse interest in participation in welfare work. 4) Meeting the mentally handicapped gave the students an opportunity to understand the mentally handicapped and to recognize the respect for human rights and to cultivate the spirit of welfare.
