The objective of this study was to clarify the meaning of spontaneous participation in lesson
study workshops for home economics teachers. Informal lesson study workshops were held in July
and September in 2019. Professional pedagogues working and researching in a university organized
the workshops, and they were planned as a forum for home economics teachers, meeting together and
discussing what a “good lesson” for home economics education is.
The topic was food education focusing on SDGs. Teachers were required to construct their lessons
with global perspectives. The group discussions were recorded, and the dialogues were analyzed with
regard to every teacher’s position.
We focused on two teachers. One of them was the youngest participant with the least teaching
experience. The other teacher, who had over thirty years of teaching experience, was working as a
supervisor on the educational board. Semi-structured interviews with these teachers were analyzed to
clarify why they joined in the workshops and what the workshops’ value was.
The results suggested that every teacher had their own position in the group and felt that
participation in the workshop had value for their career.
