Learning about diverse families and learning with the understanding and cooperation of the family
are pivotal in Home Economics classes. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the circumstances in
each household.
However, learning about the family is difficult in Home Economics education, and practical
problems and difficulties in considering children’s various home environments are being discussed.
This study focuses on single-parent child-rearing and aims to clarify concerns about the treatment
of diverse families and expectations for learning about the family. Interviews with 22 single parents were
conducted in 2023. The participant was either a monitor for the research company or a person introduced
through snowball sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Approval was obtained from the
committee to conduct the interviews.
Many parents said that learning about family in H.E classes was not a concern. When learning about
divorce and the death of a parent, additional considerations are required. Many parents favored using
statistical data, but care for children was needed in the H.E. class. Most parents said that the presence
of same-gender adults was necessary for children during puberty. They think that it is difficult to impart
perspectives on marriage and secondary sexual characteristics from their own perspectives.
