This review makes the following observations about research related to Arctic waste: firstly, there is a regional bias in anthropological research on waste and discarding, which has resulted in relatively little research being conducted in the Arctic compared to other regions. Secondly, most research, including non-anthropological studies, has investigated waste coming into the Arctic region from outside. In contrast, recently, the problem of waste generated by societies within the Arctic has begun to be investigated. Moreover, anthropologists have mainly blamed colonial rule as a structural factor in waste issues generated in the Arctic. Furthermore, what is needed in the future is to focus not only on the aspect of the local people as victims, but also on the aspect of the people as waste disposers, and to more accurately depict the human-waste relationship in the Arctic region. This will contribute not only to the development of regional studies of the Arctic region, but also to overcoming the false dichotomy between the social environment and the natural environment, which is a challenge for waste and discard studies in anthropology.
