Both polypropylene with expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene (PP-ePTFE) and polyester composite (PCO) are commonly used for laparoscopic incisional hernia repair (LIHR). The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of PP-ePTFE with PCO in LIHR. Between June 2011 and June 2013, 40 patients underwent LIHR, which included 14 patients of PP-ePTFE repair and 26 patients of PCO repair. We selected 14 every patients to serve as PP-ePTFE group and PCO group for this study. The patients underwent PP-ePTFE repair were case-matched for demographics with 14 patients who underwent PCO repair and demographic and operative outcomes were compared. No significant differences were observed in the mean operating time (78.5 vs. 78.8min, p=0.890), mesh fixation time (16.9 vs. 17.3ml, p=0.872), blood loss (2.7 vs. 4.5ml, p=0.064) and length of hospital stay (4.9 vs. 4.5 days, p=0.526). Although 2 patients developed seroma in the PP-ePTFE group, no significant difference was observed in the rate of morbidities (14.2 vs. 0%, p=0.463). The mean follow-up period of the PP-ePTFE group was significantly shorter than the PCO group (9.6 vs. 15.4 months, p=0.049). Our study demonstrated no significant association between type of prosthetic mesh used and short-term outcome or overall postoperative complication.
