Abstract: We described speech disorders and its treatment on a typical case of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, and discussed the etiology of its speech disorders as follows.
.In speech, nasality, articulation disorders (weak consonant, glottal stop, omission) and retardation of speech development were recognized.
.The patient had hypofunction of the soft palate and the masticatory system.
.He showed abnormal behavior in that he hid his face with his hands and ran about the room of the clinic.
.He possessed normal intelligence and hearing.
.It was speculated that retardation of speech development and abnormal behavior were caused by his bad environment.
.It was thought that his speech disorders were caused by hypofunction of the lip, the tongue and the soft palate, and the hypofunction was induced by microstomia and abnormal shape of the lower lip.
.In speech therapy, 1) instructing his mother to improve the environment, 2) functional and 3) articulatory production training were applied with good results.
