Recently, several studies have examined the biological activity of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which have been shown to promote the induction and regeneration of bone tissue within a short period of time. Autolyzed, antigen extracted, allogeneic (AAA) bone matrix, which is prepared from human cadaver bone by a chemical procedure that conserves the BMP content of bone tissue, not only has bone-induction capacity but also facilitates remodeling of newly forming bone.
AAA bone matrix was implanted in bony defects after radicular cystectomy of the lower left molar region. In this patient, the postoperative course was good, and there were no complications.
Opaque areas on X-ray film were noted whthin 10 weeks after the cystectomy. AAA bone matrix was considered to be a useful biological material for the surgical treatment of radicular cyst.
