We performed a clinico-statistical study of 36 permanent teeth that were replanted after being avulsed by trauma. We found that the most frequently involved age group was 6 to 12 years old, and the average age was 13.8 years old. The most frequent causes were falling dropping, sports, and playing, and the maxillary central incisors were the most frequently avulsed teeth. Avulsed teeth were most often air-dried. The average period between avulsion and replantation was 4.9 hours.
The most common type of splinting was a rigid wire fixation using an arch bar, and the average period of splinting was 54.4 days.
As for the outcome of replantation, most root resorption occurred within 1 year after replantation and root resorption was closely related to the period between avulsion and replantation. The replanted teeth were functional after replantation and the 5-year survival rate was 63.6%. The 5-year rate of root resorption was 81.8%.
The results suggest that every effort should be made to preserve avulsed teeth even when conditions are unfavorable for replantation.
