On the Physical Constitution of Senior High School Athletes

Abstract

By examining the characteristics of the constitution of participants in All-Japan High School Athletic Meeting held in the 41st of Showa (1966), the following results were obtained. I. Generally the constitution of the participants is far superior to that of the national, average of the same age. Among boys' events, however, it is considerably inferior as to height, in gymnastics by apparatus, and team floor exercise, and as to weight in archery to the national average of 15 years old. It is also much less among girls' of events, as to height, in gymnastics by apparatus, and as to weight and chest in team floor exercise than that of 16 years old. II. Judging the constitution from a synthetic viewpoint of height, weight and chest measure, the participants can be classed into the following types. 1 ) Thin-tall type : boys...basketball, volleyball girls...volleyball, handball 2) Thick-tall type: boys...Sumo (Japanese wrestling), judo, baseball, rowing girls...rowig, softball 3) Thin-short type: boys...table-tennis, archery, badminton girls...badminton, hockey, team floor exercise 4) Thick-short type: boys...gymnastics by apparatus, tean floor exercise girls...gymnastics by apparatus 5) Middle type: boys...Kendo (Japanese fencing), handball, soft-ball tennis, association football, cycling, hockey girls...basketball, kendo (Japanese fencing), soft-ball tennis, table tennis, archery
