The purpose of this study was to consider the situation of gymnasiums in Austria around 1950 through analysis of a physical education course, with a particular focus on the type of physical exercise. The main historical materials examined were administrative documents of the Federal Ministry Republic of Austria Education in the Archive der Republic, which was a department of the Austrian State Archives in Vienna. The handbook Leibeserziehung (1949) written by H. Groll and W. Burger, who were leading figures in Austrian PE after the Second World War, was referenced. Through this research it was possible to obtain facts about the situation of gymnasiums from 5 out of 8 counties in Austria and Vienna city.
The results of the analysis are summarized as follows:
Although the Austrian Government published a new national course of study on September 3rd 1945, there were many problems with the exact practice of PE throughout the country. Around 1950, the situation of gymnasiums in Austria was far from ideal, and some were still derelict as a result of bombing, or had been requisitioned by film companies; some had insufficient heating or were unsuitable for ball games. Importantly, it appeared that there were no gymnasiums in schools at this time. According to the administrative documents, it appeared that in a worst-case scenario, the practice of PE might have to be stopped. These effects extended to the practice of PE on cold winter days or during bad weather. Therefore, a lot of schools were forced to practice PE carried using substitute exercises or in small spaces in the classroom. These substitute exercises were called “Zehnminutenturnen” (10-Minute Exercises) and “Klassenzimmerturnen” (Classroom Exercises) in the handbook Leibeserziehung, and “Minutenturunen” (Minute Exercises) and “Zimmerturnen” (Room Exercises) in the administrative documents. In particular, the practice of “Zehnminutenturnen” and “Klassenzimmerturnen”, i.e. “old free gymnastics”, continued to deviate from the Austrian course of study. Consequently, these situations meant that the reconstruction of Austrian PE after the Second World War was very difficult. It would have been difficult to overcome many of the problems associated with Austrian PE without drastically changing the situation of gymnasiums.
