The purposes of qualitative research are to better understand the phenomenon, social interaction and psychological world from an emic perspective of research participants. In other words, it is important for researchers to withhold the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ criteria to statistically evaluate the fact of phenomenon. Recently, the number of researchers who are interested in conducting qualitative research has been increasing in health professions education. However, in proportion to this trend, many researchers might be struggling to carry out qualitative research due to some problems in terms of setting research questions, identifying sample size, managing the enormous volumes of qualitative data, and understanding data analysis procedures. Responding to common questions about qualitative research, we discuss the premises, principles and practices in this research methodology.
