The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Cycle is utilized for educational improvement. Among these steps, “checking” is especially important to increase the quality of education, and there have been many reports on checking methods. However, if faculty members do not recognize the problems of the education they provide, they will not be able to perform appropriate checking. Examples of educational failures serve as important teaching materials for recognizing the problems of education. This paper reports 2 failure cases that actually occurred in the educational field and the results of their inspections to confirm the problems and effectiveness of improvement plans.
In Case 1, the lecture method was a failure. Analysis using regular examination results as an indicator identified a subject with low educational effects. The educational effects of the subject were significantly improved by changing the lecture method based on the theory of knowledge acquisition.
In Case 2, a failure occurred with experience-based learning item change. Analysis of student learning reports after the change revealed that the educational effects were significantly lower than before it.
The results demonstrate that appropriate checking improves educational effects.
