We present the cytologic features of renal malakoplakia diagnosed in a 70-year-old Japanese woman. The large number of Michaelis-Gutmann (MG) bodies, a hallmark of this unique disease, in liquid-based cytology specimens as compared to conventional smear specimens was particularly noteworthy. Among the possible reasons for this phenomenon are the increased attraction power of glass slides for liquid-based cytology preparations, the electrical charge of MG bodies, and the specific gravity of MG bodies.
