An 83-year-old woman with vaginal bleeding was found to have a nodule in the vaginal wall but no hypergammaglobulincmia or dysfunction of other organs. Smear cytology showed clusters of giant cells without atypia, and localization of globular amorphous material within cytoplasm. histological examination confirmed an amyloid tumor with a prominent foreign-body giant cell reaction. Since foreign body reaction often characterizes localized amyloidosis and amyloid material itself is difficult to identify in routine staining, multinucleated giant cells serve as a diagnostic clue for diagnosing of localized amyloidosis.
