Abstract

Previous research has discussed the contribution to the improvement of companies' R&D activities and economic performance through the relationship between big science and suppliers. Furthermore, based on these previous studies, the author defined big science as large-scale research infrastructure requiring advanced technology, which necessitates close cooperation between research institutes contributing to innovation and suppliers, beyond merely scientific discoveries.

In this report, interviews were conducted with companies that received matching support from the Tokeiren Business Center concerning ILC and small and medium-sized suppliers. Focusing on small and medium-sized suppliers, this study attempted to identify the challenges faced when developing new businesses based on the technical know-how acquired in relation to big science. Each company has established a competitive advantage by enhancing its technological capabilities and organizational strength; however, it has become clear that they have not yet developed an active system for constructing conduits to other industries.
