The abuse of over-the-counter (OTC) medications has become an increasingly serious issue, particularly among younger people. While the situation and countermeasures in urban areas have been frequently reported in the media, the actual conditions in regional cities remain less well understood. To clarify the situation in such areas, we conducted a survey of 13 drugstores in Wakayama City, focusing on five categories of OTC drugs known to be prone to abuse. The survey examined product display methods, purchase limits, and other in-store practices. The findings revealed that several stores had room for improvement in implementing countermeasures. Some current regulations appear not to be fully adapted to the realities of drugstore operations in these settings, suggesting a potential challenge in preventing OTC drug abuse.
