In order to develop an environmentally-friendly cutting technology by oil-free mist lubrication, the cutting performance of the combination of Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coated tool and alcohol mist lubrication was evaluated. The cutting experiments of the aluminum alloy (AC2A) were conducted with a lathe. The result showed that the cutting force was reduced and the aluminum adhesion width on the tool was small using the DLC (ta-C) coated tool and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) mist. Especially at the low cutting speed (50 m/min), the cutting force and the adhesion width were comparable to those values at cutting in the wet condition. This was caused by the low frictional condition of the tool surface. Therefore, it is found that the environmentally-friendly cutting technology for the aluminum alloys is promising by the combination of the DLC coated tool and alcohol mist lubrication.
