Generally, cutting ratio is used as a parameter to evaluate cutting fluid efficiency. However, there is some uncertainty because the thickness of the chips considerably fluctuates.
Authors consider that not only mean value of the chip thickness but also its flactuation are available for evaluating cutting fluid efficiency.
In this report, the distributions of chip thickness in dry cutting and wet with various types of cutting fluid are investigated by calculating the mean values, variances of the chip thickness and the standard deviations etc.
The main results are as follows :
The distribution of thickness of flow type chips produced in a steady cutting could be regarded as a normal distribution.
The variances of chip thickess have a linear correlation with those of the cutting force and surface roughness.
The cutting fluid can be evaluated more exactly by the position of the point on the co-ordinate plane of cutting ratio (rc) and standard deviation of chip thickness (σ) than only by the cutting ratio rc.
