In order to obtain the information on the mechanism of the formation of the cold-worked region produced at the cutting process, the tention test, the indenting test and the low speed orthogonal-cutting has been studied on Fe-Si alloy. The observation of the dislocation is also carried out by etch-pit method.
The main results obtained are as follows :
(1) The cold-worked region can easily be determined by observing the occurrence region, of dislocation etch-pits, and using etch-pit method it has two merits that the cold-worked region is observed directly by the naked eye, and more microscopically than usual method.
(2) The cold-worked region is varied with crystal orientation and by cutting condition. These factors are unified to the factor of cutting force.
(3) Depth of the cold-worked region increases with increasing normal component of cutting force, and the cold-worked region ahead of cutting tool increases with increasing tangential component of cutting force. Depth of the cold-worked region and the cold-worked region ahead of cutting tool are found to be linear with normal component and tangential component of cutting force, respectively.
