The wear and life of the tool (coated abrasive belt) in contact wheel surface belt grinding were investigated experimentally under various grinding conditions and its general characteristics were made clear. Some of them are as follows. (1) Grinding speed is one of the most important factors affecting the wear of the tool. Generally, lower grinding speed is advantageous for decreasing the wear andextending the life of the tool. (2) A hard contact wheel such as the steel one, contrary to expectations, increases the tool-life. At the same time, it was proved that the parameter hN proposed in the lst Report is useful values for evaluating the wear and life of the tool quantitatively and the equation of the tool-life introduced here is valid. A new belt grinder was costructed in order to confirm the validity of the above results. The grinding conditions were adaptive-controlled by a microcomputer in response to change of the parameter hN and the depth of cut. As a result, the sizing accuracy and the tool-life was simultaneously improved.
