The growing model of built-up edge (BUE) is proposed when single and multiphase steels were machined. The microstructures necessary for growing BUE are summarized as follows. The number of phase is more than dual, and each phase has a sufficient deformability to form the elongated layer, and crack propagates between phases in the layer. Single phase and dual phase such as ferrite-spherical cementite and tempered martensite-cementite with a low deformability do not form BUE. Multiphase such as Ferrite-pearlite, ferrite-graphite and ferrite-manganese sulfide with a high deformability forms BUE.
