A class of loss functions is formulated for a problem of counting by weighing. The problem consists of obtaining a preliminary sample, estimating the mean weight and asking for a batch of the items to weigh at least a certain weight determined by the estimated mean weight and the number of items demanded. For this class of loss functions, the optimal preliminary sample size is of smaller order of magnitude than that of the number of items demanded as that number becomes large. In particular, it will include the case when the optimal preliminary sample size grows as a square root of the total number of items.
