The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Stress Management Program for Kyudo (Japanese archery) athletes to improve their psychological state and the rate of hitting the mark in Kyudo. 36 college Kyudo athletes (17 males, 19 females, mean age=19.80, SD=1.26) completed State-Trait Anxiety Inventory in Japanese (STAI ; Hidano et al., 2000) and Mental Health Pattern (MHP ; Hashimoto et al., 2000) for four times from September 2 to October 14, 2002. They were divided into high anxious group (experimental group ; n=15, 4 males, 11 females, mean age=19.40, SD=1.12) and low anxious group (control group ; n=21, 13 males, 8 females, mean age=20.00, SD=1.32) according to the mean score of STAI at pre test. The subjects in the experimental group participated in the Stress Management Program for fifteen minutes per day for two weeks. Data was analyzed using a 2 (groups) × 4 (times) two way repeated measures ANOVA. The results indicated significant interactions or main effects for times of State-Anxiety, Psychological stress, Physical stress, QOL and the rate of hitting the mark in Kyudo. This research showed that the Stress Management Program as a mental training improved psychological conditions and the rate of hitting the mark of Kyudo athletes effectively.
