This is a report of a beginning level Japanese language class for international graduate students in science to prepare for employment in Japan. Graduate students with no Japanese ability can study in English and some hope to work in Japan. However, Japanese communication is required in the workplace. The objective of the class was to develop Japanese language ability at the elementary level, by writing and sending email in Japanese, and using the grammar they learned for self-expression activities. As a result, students became less resistant to writing in Japanese, and interviews with a job counselor indicated increased motivation.
