This study examines discussion characteristics that exert a positive influence on conversation in Question Formula Technique activities. In a pre-advanced Japanese course, a recorded discussion was analyzed. Four factors of successful communication outlined by FitzGerald(2010) were identified during the group session in which questioning technique was improved through discussion: 1) a willingness to shift positions or appreciate other's point of view, 2) a high level of interactivity and inclusivity, 3) participants taking a facilitating role, and 4) humor. The results indicate that discussion skills play vital roles in this activity.
