This study used short essays from the learner corpus I-JAS to examine the production of compound verbs by Vietnamese learners of Japanese. Instances of ‘non-use’ were expected to be more frequent in the database. The results indicate that the frequency and variety of compound verbs are lower among native speakers of Vietnamese than among Japanese native speakers. This study covers compound verbs expressing directional path of motion like hairi-komu, tobi-komu and tobi-dasu. Despite equivalent expressions existing in their native language, even intermediate-level Vietnamese learners are incapable of producing these compound verbs.
