The author conducted extensive reading activities in a pre-intermediate-level Japanese language class, utilizing characteristics of an online class. The features are as follows: 1) Reading materials were selected on the condition that the digital file could be opened with just one click, with many front covers visible in one glance at the website. 2) The instructor used an Internet forum in the university’s learning management system and created each material’s thread on the forum. Thus, the reaction and the effect quite like those of a normal in-person class were observed although it was difficult to track each student’s ongoing activity.
