In recent years, there has been an increasing need to train personnel to support community Japanese language education. Besides professional Japanese-language teachers, community-based Japanese language education is supported by local residents and municipal staff, the training of non-specialists has largely depended on volunteer training programs conducted at the local level. This paper focuses on university students who, despite not being enrolled in Japanese language teacher training programs, are interested in international exchange. It explores the potential for developing future human resources for community-based Japanese language education. Over a three-year period, lectures on community Japanese language classrooms and workshops on “Plain Japanese” were delivered to undergraduate students, aiming to provide opportunities to engage with community-based Japanese language education. This paper reports on the content and significance of this initiative.
